River Maira

Fluss Maira

Wild and striking, the River Maira winds through the narrow valley. Especially in spring, when snowmelt pours down from the mountains, the water thunders through with full force – loud, alive, untamed.

🔍 Why does this matter?

– The River Maira is one of Italy’s last largely unaltered mountain rivers.

– It has not been channelled and is only lightly dammed – making it a valuable habitat for fish, amphibians and rare insects.

– Free-flowing rivers like the Maira constantly reshape themselves – creating dynamism, natural gravel banks, refuges for wildlife and freshness across the floodplain.

🌱 What has this got to do with sustainability?

– Intact mountain rivers store water during dry spells, buffer floods and cleanse themselves.

– They are climate-stabilising ecosystems that benefit people, animals and plant life alike.

– Their protection is a key objective of the Natura 2000 network.

👉 Note: When you listen to the water, you hear a system that works – without technology, without intervention, only with time and space.
