Occitan language

Okzitanische Sprache

“Bon jorn!” sounds perfectly normal here – because in the Valle Maira the Occitan language is still alive, a Romance idiom with roots in the Middle Ages. Related to Provençal, it was once spoken from southern France into Piedmont.

Today only a few thousand people speak it – yet it lives on in songs, sayings and stories. You can hear it at the campsite – for example in Ivo’s video linked underneath.
